Remote Reiki – Spooky Action or Evidence Based?

Many remain skeptical of Reiki therapy, and especially remote Reiki. They have a very hard time believing that energy can travel across great distance. Much less produce tangible results.

Historically, many spiritual traditions and indigenous cultures believe all things are connected. Also, they believe in the ability of one person to affect another through thought or energy. But it was Albert Einstein who was the first to perceive physical evidence of interconnection. He observed the interaction of two objects separated in space with no known mediator of their interaction. As a result, he jokingly called it “spooky action at a distance.”

It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that the pioneers of quantum physics offered us a new understanding of the universe based on interconnection. Their equations led them to astounding discoveries. “They realized the very underpinning of our universe was a heaving sea of energy, one vast quantum field. If this were true, everything would be connected to everything else like some invisible web,” say Lynne McTaggart in her bookThe Field.

The quantum world creates the scientific foundation to Einstein’s “spooky action” and what the spiritualists and indigenous cultures knew all along – we are one.

Documented Evidence of Distance Healing

Daniel J. Benor, MD describes more than 100 experiments conducted over the past 30 years on the positive effects of distant healing in his article Distant Healing. Including retarding the growth of bacteria, slowing the growth of cancer cells and tumors in mice. Protecting mice from the effects of radiation and accelerating post-surgical cardiac patient recover. In addition, creating positive outcomes for back pain, hypertension, anxiety and nausea in chemotherapy.

Larry Dossey, MD has led the change for bringing distant healing therapies into mainstream healthcare. Dr. Dossey in his book Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing also cites research studies that document measurable outcomes for a variety of distant healing techniques and subjects.

Hospitals and clinics across the country might not yet be touting the benefits of remote Reiki, but they’re using in-person Reiki as a cost effective way to accelerate recover after surgery, reduce pain and anxiety, and ameliorate the negative side effects of medications and other medical procedures.

Reiki is now listed in a nursing “scope and standards of practice” publication as an accepted form of care. And a 2008 USA Today article reported that in 2007 15% of U.S. hospitals (over 800) offered Reiki, according to The International Center for Reiki Training.

Remote Reiki in Simple Terms

Think of Reiki working as your cell phone. It’s not necessary to be in physical proximity to a caller to talk on a cell phone. Because cell phones use electromagnetic radio waves to connect with other cell phones. Similarly, Reiki recipients do not need to be in physical proximity to Reiki practitioners to receive Reiki. Just as practitioners don’t need to be near recipients to send it. Because… we are all one.
