Brain Waves and the Healing Power of Hypnosis

To appreciate the healing power of hypnosis, it helps to understand the five types of brain waves. Each type consists of wave frequencies referred to as Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta, or Gamma, with frequency measured in cycles per second or hertz (Hz). Each frequency band corresponds to specific brain activity and states of consciousness. Below is an explanation of each state.

Beta (14–40 Hz) Brain Waves

Beta represents normal waking consciousness and active reasoning. It is associated with a heightened state of alertness, logic, problem-solving, and critical reasoning—though it can also translate into stress, anxiety, and fear.

Alpha (7.5–14 Hz) Brain Waves

Alpha waves are present during deep physical and mental relaxation—typically when your eyes are closed, during daydreams, or during light meditation. Your imagination, visualization, and memory are heightened in this state, making a strong impact on your subconscious mind. It is the optimal time to program the mind for positive changes, reaching goals, or achieving desired success. Awareness remains keen, serving as a gateway to intuition and higher wisdom. Much can be accomplished during hypnosis with a practitioner or through self-hypnosis within Alpha brain waves.

Theta (4–7.5 Hz) Brain Waves

Theta waves are present during hypnosis, deep meditation, and light sleep, including the all-important REM dream state—the realm of your subconscious mind. The Alpha-Theta transition state (around 7–8 Hz) is where the creative power of your mind begins; it is the mental state in which you consciously create your reality. Theta is the level most commonly accessed during hypnosis. Experiencing 30 minutes in deep Theta during hypnosis can leave you feeling as refreshed as eight hours of peaceful sleep.

Delta (0.5–4 Hz) Brain Waves

Delta is the deepest level of consciousness. As the slowest frequency, it occurs during deep, dreamless sleep and very deep transcendental meditation or hypnosis. In this state, one can tap into the universal mind and collective consciousness to access information otherwise unavailable. Delta is essential for deep physical healing and bodily regeneration.

Gamma (Above 40 Hz) Brain Waves

Gamma is the fastest frequency (above 40 Hz) and the most recently discovered. Research indicates Gamma waves are associated with sudden bursts of insight and high-level information processing.

Brain Wave States for Hypnosis

While much can be accomplished in a light trance (Alpha brain waves), most hypnotherapists prefer to work with clients in a medium level of trance (Theta brain waves). Here, the client remains aware of outside noises without being distracted by them. They are deeply relaxed and far more open to suggestion than in a light trance. Approximately 80% of people can comfortably reach this medium trance state.

Fewer than 50% of individuals reach a deep, somnambulistic trance with Delta brain waves, yet some of the most profound therapeutic work can occur here. In this deep state, a person can open their eyes without exiting hypnosis, experience selective or sensory perception shifts, and accept complex suggestions.

Ultimately, any level of trance—even a light one—can be highly effective, provided it allows your thought processes to be addressed without the constant critical filtering of the conscious mind (Beta brain waves).

The Power of Hypnosis

Once you enter a hypnotic state of deep relaxation and focused attention, the hypnotist can directly address the subconscious mind—where learned behavior patterns and habits reside—while allowing the busy conscious mind to step into the background. In this receptive state, desired changes take root, transforming suggestions into action at the subconscious level.

If you are tired of struggling with negative thoughts, unwanted behaviors, or habits such as chronic anxiety and despair, discover the healing power of hypnosis to help you truly enjoy your life.
