The Difference Between Self-hypnosis and Meditation
As a hypnotist, I am often asked what is the difference between Self-hypnosis and Meditation. My response is while they share similarities, such as inducing a relaxed state and focusing the mind, they have different purposes and approaches. Both are powerful tools for transformation and some people, such as myself, combine them for deeper healing and self-development.
The following is a thorough breakdown that will bring clarity to their differences.
Purpose:
Self-hypnosis is typically goal-oriented, used to instill suggestions, change behaviors, or access the subconscious mind for healing, habit changes, or self-improvement.
Meditation is generally about awareness, mindfulness, or spiritual growth. It helps calm the mind, cultivate presence, and deepen self-awareness without necessarily seeking a specific outcome.
Mental State:
Self-hypnosis guides the mind into a trance-like state where it becomes more receptive to suggestions.
Meditation encourages an open and often detached state of awareness, observing thoughts without attachment.
Techniques:
Self-hypnosis often involves guided scripts, affirmations, or visualizations to reprogram the subconscious.
Meditation can take many forms including mindfulness, breath awareness, or mantra repetition, often with an emphasis on stillness and non-reactivity.
Awareness Level:
In self-hypnosis, the conscious mind is bypassed to communicate with the subconscious directly.
In meditation, there’s typically a balance between conscious awareness and observing the subconscious without interference.

Self-hypnosis and Meditation Offerings
It’s exciting that you wanted to learn the differences between self-hypnosis and meditation. I feel confident you now know the differences. I encourage you to incorporate one or both modalities on a consistent basis for well-being and constructive change.
Self-hypnosis is best learned with assistance during hypnosis sessions. Success in hypnosis is based on an active partnership between the hypontist and client, and homework is often prescribed. Teaching Self-hypnosis in my hypnosis session is an integral part of the homework and a very important reinforcement for what we’ve accomplished together in our sessions.
