Gems of the Week: How to BE Bigger Than Your Britches
How many times were you told as a child, "Don't get too big for your britches?" It was used often growing up in my generation by our parents or authority figures when we were acting out of line. It was equivalent to "Children should be seen, but not heard." I didn't hear either of these paralyzing phrases often, but enough to know it as "reduce your presence," "be less than" and "don't shine too brightly!" I've since learned and have fully realized that BEING too big for my britches is exactly what I AM and this lends itself to pure, unadulterated Joy.
This realization has nothing to do with what the ego thinks in terms of big or small, and everything to do with your true Self or very essence. I love Marianne Williamson's famous quote from her book, A Return to Love: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." When we know the power that lies within, our Godly nature at the very core of our human experience, we fully realize how powerful we are. Our Light shines brightly into the world and effects the whole. Our very Presence makes a positive difference. We become deliberate creators of our lives versus purely reacting to situations and circumstances. Judgment dissolves and we experience more Joy throughout the day regardless of what comes our way. Why would we be afraid of this? Are we afraid of "getting too big for our britches?" Is it because knowing how powerful we are makes us 100% responsible for our lives as creators?
God is within and without. He is in you and everything. The only way to know this is to: "Be still and know that I AM God," Psalms 46:10. Spending time in quiet reflection, meditation and prayer provides the knowing and experience of indescribable greatness that is you. God is not cognitive! To know God, hence your very essence, is experiential.
The remainder of Marianne's famous quote is:
"It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
Give yourself permission to BE bigger than your britches!
The world needs your Light!
The world needs you!
