Gem of the Week: What Condition is YOUR Condition in?

u.1.letlovelead.jpg

What Condition is YOUR Condition in?

The simple lyric, "What condition is my condition in," randomly (Or was it?) popped in my head recently from nowhere.  This happens to me from time to time.  When it does, I search online for the remaining lyrics because usually it inspires my next Gem of the WeekI found that the song, Just Dropped In, (To see what condition my condition was in), supposedly put Kenny Rogers on the map.

After reading the lyrics, I actually felt dizzy from its context.  I reread them a couple times to try to make heads or tales from it.  Unbeknownst to me,  "It was written as a song about junkies."  No wonder I felt what I'd imagine to be a bad acid trip.  It became a big hit after sung by Kenny Rogers accompanied by a psychedelic video on The Smothers Brothers television show in 1968.  Somewhat disappointed, I concluded that there was no inspiration for my Gem of the Week from this song.  Yet, I couldn't get "What condition is my condition in" out of my mind; sooooo... here we go:  What condition is YOUR condition in?

We are all influenced, to one degree or another, by our past conditioning; especially conditioning from our childhood.  A matter of fact, prior to the age seven, we have very little ability to use discernment.  What we hear, see, or experience  repeatedly is deeply imprinted into our  hearts as the truth.  These truths or beliefs (often false) about ourselves and the world we live in can remain with us our entire lives.  Unfortunately, some are not so positive.  Many people are on auto-pilot living their lives based on their past conditioning.  They go through life simply reacting without awareness to their patterns that give them the same ole, same ole.  Our conditioning and beliefs greatly effect us emotionally, physically and mentally.

The Institute of Heart Math has scientifically proven that the heart, not the brain, is the most powerful neural-network within the body.  Its electrode-magnetic field is 5,000 times greater than that of the brain.  The heart is literally communicating with the brain in every given moment of the day.  It is the first organ developed in the human body and has an intelligence all of its own.  The heart is also constantly pulsating out and affecting the environment.

"Coherence between our hearts and our brains is the ultimate state of being in experiencing overall emotional, physical, and mental health," states the Institute of Heart MathMost of us already know in our hearts this to be true and have no need for the science of it.  Yet, do we really know how powerful our hearts are?

The ultimate question you must ask yourself is what old conditioning and beliefs are you holding in your heart that are governing your life and affecting the whole?  The ones that promote harmony, joy, peace and love are guaranteed to be truth and establish coherence.  All others are perpetuated nonsense that keep us conflicted and confused and affect our health and the world in negative ways.  "Simply contemplating compassion and gratitude increases heart and brain coherence," states Institute of Heart Math.  And may I add, practicing self-compassion is a must!

Don't worry if you have no idea how to start self-compassion.  Trust me, it can be learned.  Take it from someone who had self-criticism down to a fine science - moi!  Start small.  It's like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets.  Be kind to yourself rather than judgmental.  Ask yourself two questions:   How would I treat a friend who is going through the same thing or feeling the same way?  What do I need right now?  Then treat yourself accordingly.

What condition is YOUR condition in?  Is it loving, accepting, non-judgmental, forgiving, compassionate, and kind?  Or is it full of criticism, rejection, judgment, non-forgiveness, and grievances?  Either for yourself or others?

No matter what your past conditioning consists of or the current condition your condition is in, the truth of the matter is:  Your birthright is love!  Love heals all wounds and is the most powerful force of all.  Spend time daily opening your heart to God's love.  Place your hands on your heart, focus there, breathe deeply into it until you feeeeeeel love from the tip of your head to the tips of your toes.  You are worthy of love.  You are deserving of love. Period.

Gem of the Week: How Does Your Garden Grow?

u.1.flowers4.jpg
"We must cultivate our own garden."
~Voltaire

Some believe that in this age where we are pressed for space and time, "gardening is an impracticable luxury."  Personally, I find it a need, not a luxury.  A need in that it nourishes my soul. Seeding and planting simply bring me joy.  My hands in dirt feels playful and I love the anticipation of new growth and color, lots of color.  I've also found gardens and the act of gardening have a lot to teach us in a spiritual sense.

The following are my top three gardening tips... in a spiritual sense:

Gardening teaches us patience.   Growth and beautiful blooms take time - it's a process.  It doesn't just happen over night.  We can't rush it and must allow it to unfold naturally while nurturing it along the way.  Nurturing in terms of sun, water, pruning, and fertilizer.  It is the same with  the human experience.  We need patience with ourselves - our personal growth is a process.  It doesn't just happen over night.  Self-nurturance, self-compassion and self-love are mandatory for an open and beautiful heart (garden) bearing fruits of the spirit:  joy, peace, harmony, and love.  Be gentle and patient with you!

Gardening requires weeding.  Why is it that (mental) weeds (not flowers) seem to grow plentifully and effortlessly?  It tends to be human nature to look for the negative or to dwell upon it.  This is partly due to the natural "fight or flight" survival mechanism that we all have.  It is largely due to the beliefs we hold in our hearts creating those pesky, disturbing thoughts.  Having awareness of the negative beliefs that stunt our growth and choke us is the first step to healing.  Joy grows as negativity is removed.  We weed our thoughts to remove those that hinder growth.  Which mental weeds are choking your growth?

Gardens are to be celebrated.   Celebrate new growth and keep tending it so growth can continue, and when it does, you thrive.  Remember... there is no such thing as a perfect garden and yes, those darn weeds will continue to pop up - clear them and keep on growing!  AND, by all means, do not compare your garden to others.  Comparison is the thief of joy.  Joy is in your own personal garden - no one else's!

Tend to your spiritual soil - your heart.  It is a need, not a luxury.  May you grow in joy, peace, harmony and love.  Happy gardening!

Gem of the Week: Gotta Have Faith, Faith, Faith

u.1.springsunset.jpg

"Fear knocked at the door.  Faith answered.

No one was there." ~unknown

What's our worst enemy? - FEAR:  fear of lack, fear of failure, fear of sickness, fear of loss, fear of aging, and on and on it goes.  There's so much fear going around these days!  A lot is due to the media and social media.  It's constantly there, constantly reminding us of this issue or that crisis.  It seems we can never escape it.  And as a result, it's easy to become fearful and lose faith in the power of love and goodness.

Dictionary.com describes faith: confidence or trust in a person or thing; belief that is not based on proof; belief in God or in the doctrine or teachings of religion. How much faith do you have?  How much fear do you have?   God is love.  Love is the greatest force of all.  Love conquers all, including fear. Love IS.

As many of you know, I am a certified hypnotherapist with over 15 years of experience.  Naturally,  I'm a huge advocate of the power of our thoughts which stem from the beliefs held in our hearts or subconscious minds.   Your subconscious mind governs 90% of your daily functions: emotions, feelings, automatic functions, long-term memory, habit patterns, addictions, instincts, intuition, creativity and spirituality.  All input through your thoughts and senses are stored in your subconscious mind.  You can think of your subconscious mind as the hard drive in your computer.  Your conscious mind governs 10% of your daily functions: thinks, plans, organizes, short-term memory, gate-keeper.  It can be thought of as your software or operating system. You must be careful as to what you are downloading into your subconscious.

Now, ask yourself these:  What music am I listening to?  What books am I reading?  How much bad news do I watch on TV?  How much do I dwell on the negative? Where and with whom am I spending my free time?  What are my habitual thoughts or words?   What am I downloading into my subconscious?

Your answers to the above either fuel your fear or your faith!  Every input goes directly into your subconscious mind.  And the stronger the emotional charge, the more impact it has in your daily living.

What is the most direct way to substitute fear for faith?

We are made in the image of God.  The superconscious mind is the God Mind within each of us.  It is the realm of perfect ideas.  Jesus said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," and he said the Kingdom was within man.  The Kingdom is the realm of perfect ideas and holds the fruits of the spirit: joy, peace, harmony, and love.

Connecting your superconscious mind to your subconscious mind is the perfect marriage in living a life of faith versus fear.  Nothing stands between you and the desires of your heart, than doubt and fear.  God wants to give you your heart's desires!  "Ask and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.But... you gotta have faith, faith, faith.

I believe the ultimate, strongest desire of each of our hearts is simply love - to commune in oneness with our Creator.  Love is the greatest force of all.  Love conquers all.  Love IS.   Find the daily practice that is best for you to commune in God's love to strengthen your faith and weaken your fear - joining your superconscious and subconscious in perfect union; to live a life with more joy, peace, harmony and love giving you your heart's desires.

Gem of the Week: Breathe Deeply - It is God Loving You

u.1.peaceful (2).jpg

"Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With god as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony. "

I was about 12 years old when I not only first heard "Let There Be Peace on Earth," but also sang it in a grade-school choir.  I vividly recall the auditorium in which about 60 of us stood together like packed sardines upon the bleachers and most importantly, the feelings I experienced while singing this song. (I know we sang other songs, too, but I have no recollection whatsoever of any of them.) While singing the lyrics and listening to the melody, I felt an incredible sense of calmness and "magic."  "Wow, I am feeling pure peace. It is so magical," I silently claimed to myself.

I looked around at the other children and wondered if they were feeling the same thing as me.  The whole experience was surreal as if I was in a different place and time was standing still.  I remember sorely wanting to sing the song louder and louder above the other children simply because I was so excited about what I was feeling, and completely convinced that "peace began with me."  Now realize, I was probably the shiest child in the whole school.  The last thing I ever wanted was to bring attention to myself.  So wanting to sing louder than the other children was completely out of character.  "This song needs to be heard; really, really heard,"  I thought.  I knew deep from the bottom of my heart that I was singing truth - peace did begin with me.  And I most certainly wanted this magical, peaceful feeling to never go away.

Once back in the classroom, I sat at my desk watching Mrs. Elliot (my least favorite teacher, by the way) put math problems on the chalkboard wishing I could stay in these magical, peaceful feelings forever.  I thought, "If I could just sing this song all the time, these wonderful feelings would never go away."  Alas, over the years, I did quit singing the song.  In fact, I forgot the song altogether and peace seemingly left me for many reasons.

As a 'mature' adult (whatever that means), I now frequently experience peaceful feelings and deep profound peace in many of my meditations or simply strolling through nature, just as I did in choir at age 12.  What does it mean to me today, "peace begins with me?"  I think it means the exact same thing as it did for me at age 12, and...  "it needs to be heard; really, really heard."To have "peace on earth" we must be at peace within ourselves.  Only then, will we have peace with others. Only then, will we have peace on earth.  Until we quit being at war within ourselves with negative beliefs and thoughts (ego) being the ammunition, we will never experience peace outside of ourselves.  If not enough of us are feeling peace within and outside of ourselves, how will we ever have peace on earth? And may I ask this a little louder: IF NOT ENOUGH OF US ARE FEELING PEACE WITHIN AND OUTSIDE OF OURSELVES, HOW WILL WE EVER HAVE PEACE ON EARTH?

Love is the way to peace and they are both as close to you as your very breath.  Since the word breath has no form, it has since ancient times been equated with spirit. The German word for breathing (Atmen) is derived from the ancient Indian (Sanskrit) word Atman, meaning the indwelling divine spirit of God.  Also the Greek word pneuma (from which English gets "pneumatic") means both breath and spirit.  God is love.  Your very breath (spirit) is God loving you - breathe deeply!   Take time to be still and silent, and - breathe deeply!  Periodically during the day stop and - breathe deeply!  Allow your breath, God's love, to permeate every cell of your body. Allow your breath, God's love, to wash away all negative beliefs or thoughts that generate war within yourself.  No thought is worth robbing your peace.  If you are thinking or feeling negatively about yourself, you are naturally doing so about others - it's a given.   If forgiveness is in order, then forgive; including yourself.

Love and peace are as close as your very breath.  Breathe deeply...It is God loving you.  Peace does begin with me. I know it now as passionately as I did at 12 years old...

"Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With god as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony."

Twenty Gems for Your Best Year Ever!

u.1.2018.jpg

1.  Decide your own truth.  If the belief you are adhering to does not bring joy, peace, harmony & love, put it aside and choose another.

2.  Have a playful spirit; even in your daily responsibilities.  Not only will you feel better but so will those around you.

3.  Be at peace.  Surrender  to your higher power; take action as divinely guided, and know all is working towards the best.

4.  Let go of perfection.  Freely express without the fear of imperfection.  Perfection is the killer of joy.

5.  Forgive yourself and others which creates the flow of Love your heart so deeply desires.

6.  Be hopeful.  Visualize and feel the change you wish to experience.  Hold steadfast to this new vision.  Know that the change you desire is on its way.

7.  Strive for balance in mind, body and Spirit.  Think positive thoughts, move, nourish, and rest your body and find the spiritual practice that is right for you.

8.  Focus on harmonious feelings and let go of discord.  You are one with all there is; never separate or alone.

9.  Ask for divine protection when fear has overcome you.  Your angels are at your service at any moment's notice.

10.  Express your anger in loving ways that are not harmful to yourself and others.

11.  See humor in yourself and situations.  Laugh out loud several times daily; keeping a light heart.

12.  Embrace your sensuality.  Put aside all inhibitions.  You're a beautiful, sensual being!  Freely express all aspects of yourself in perfect balance.

13.  Have a grateful heart for what is and be open to receive the blessings God so desires to give you.

14.  Discard judgments of yourself and others. Spirit is not judging you; only encouraging your growth and expansion.

15.  Step out of the pressure cooker!  Do you best each day and know it is enough.

16.  Replace the "Yes but..." with "I will..."  The only limitation you have are the ones self-imposed.

17.  Practice self-acceptance.  Without self-acceptance there is no self-love.  Without self-love it is impossible to give and accept love from others.

18.  Be gentle with yourself.  When you are gentle and nurturing to yourself, then you have feelings of worthiness.  You are worthy!

19.  Quiet the mind chatter and connect with your heart-your true essence-your spirit.  This is the only way to stay centered in the truth as to who you truly are - a magnificent divine being.

20.  Embrace your authentic power.  You're a powerful being; a creator of your life with the Source of All There Is.

Happy New Year....Sparkle on!

Gem of the Week: A Soul Felt Its Worth

u.1.cardinal.jpg

The Soul
Felt Its Worth

"O holy night the stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

'Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth."

"O Holy Night" is by far my and my deceased mother's favorite Christmas carol. The most heartfelt and well received Christmas gift I ever gave her was the year I sang and recorded this beautiful carol for her on a CD, signing off, "I love you, Mom." By mid-February my father told me if he heard it one more time, he'd go crazy. She heeded him no mind and played it at least once everyday way into the spring.

I love everything about the song, from the melody to the lyrics which proclaim Jesus' message of love, peace and hope. But one phrase, in particular, jumped out as I was making my mother's recording. I reread the lyrics several times to make sure I was understanding it correctly: "Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth."

Deep in my heart, I believe that was Jesus' main mission. That is, to awaken people to their divinity; the God within themselves. Did he not say, "The kingdom of God is within" and "You can do as much as me and even more." We are like Jesus. Our true nature is Godly.

My Christmas wish for you is one of pure Joy! Put aside your judgments of self and others in order to know your worth. You are a sparkling gem; a gift to the world! Yes, you!!

Merry Christmas!

Gem of the Week: Hokey Pokey, Anyone?

u.1.charleshardin5.jpg

Hokey Pokey, Anyone?

Hanging in my hallway, where I can read it often, is a sign with the words, What if the Hokey Pokey Really IS What It's All About?  I bought it a few years back thinking it would be a great reminder to lighten up, to not take myself, or life, too seriously.   I had become very aware that with life's ups and downs and unpredictability, the ultimate goal, the only one that makes sense, has to be to live in joy.

I've found that joy is not dependent on what happens or doesn't happen or what's considered good or bad or on anything that lies outside of me.  It is 100% dependent on my perspectives, thoughts, and judgments; especially  judgments. We clearly have the choice to choose joy.  Why would we choose not to have it?

For many people, being unhappy protects them from pain.  Surprising, huh?  Brene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, states in her book, Daring Greatly, that after many years of studying what it means to be joyful, she'd argue that joy is probably the most difficult emotion to feel.  When she asked participants about the experiences that made them feel the most vulnerable, she did not expect the joyful moments.  One lady reported to Brown, "It's easier to live disappointed than it is to feel disappointed.  It feels more vulnerable to dip in and out of disappointment than to just set up camp there.  You sacrifice joy, but you suffer less pain."  Brown states that we are desperate for more joy, but at the same time we can't tolerate the vulnerability.

The good news is gratitude, according to Brown, emerged from her data as the antidote to foreboding joy. "In fact, every participant who spoke about the ability to stay open to joy also talked about the importance of practicing gratitude. Her research participants consistently described both joyfulness and gratitude as spiritual practices bound to a belief in human connectedness and a power greater than us.  Participants described happiness as an emotion that's connected to circumstances, and they described joy as a spiritual way of engaging with the world that's connected to practicing gratitude."

I believe our divine birthright is a glorious adventure of Joy.  Unfortunately, at a very young age we are taught to believe quite differently.  We are taught judgments and ideologies that are anything but joyful. We are also bombarded daily with news of gloom and doom portraying nothing remotely close to joy; only scarcity and fear.   And yes, it takes courage to be joyful!  It's really easy to be unhappy. But we clearly have the choice.

We have the choice to believe or not believe the negative perspectives and thoughts that rob us of our joy. We have the choice to limit how much negative input we allow in our lives.  We have the choice to live life to its fullest which requires vulnerability and possibly being disappointed or to wear an armor of protection just going through the motions of life.  We have the choice to focus on scarcity or to practice gratitude.

What if... The Hokey Pokey Really IS What It's All About?  What if... life doesn't have to be so serious?  What if... unadulterated joy is the goal?  What if you, being divine in nature, are joy?  I think so!

Gem of the Week: Our Greatest Gift

u.1.autumn.jpg

Our Greatest Gift

"We have not come into this

exquisite world to hold ourselves

hostage from love.  We have not

come here to take prisoners,

but to surrender ever more

deeply to freedom and joy."~Hafez

Why do we withhold love and joy from ourselves?  Why would we deny ourselves freedom to fully be authentic?  Is it fear of hurt or rejection?  Is it simply not feeling worthy?  Our ability to give and receive love is our greatest gift; our greatest joy.  Closing our hearts to others, leaves us feeling empty.

Many people have difficulty giving and receiving love because of hurt and fear - me included from time to time.  Our loving heart, like our physical one, needs to be exercised.  It is a muscle based on trust.  This trust muscle needs to be used.  If not, it becomes weakened. We must take responsibility for this loving function of ourselves.

Love hidden or love rejected can turn us into walking robots.  We no longer experience the true joys of life.  The receiving of love inward and the flow outward is the ultimate human experience.  There is a lot of love around us, but often we do not realize it.  I've heard people that have become very ill state how that didn't realize there was so much love for them until they became sick.  Must we wait for illness or a catastrophic event in our lives to open to love?  We need to claim our hearts now as a precious commodity and work on giving and receiving love.

In stillness and quiet, consciously open your heart to the greatest love of all - that of the Divine.  Make it a practice.  Enveloping yourself often in this unconditional love builds trust to freely love others. You are a child of the Divine, worthy of such love and joy. Your heart is fashioned in God's image at the center of your being.  Its ability to give and receive love is crucial to your soul.  Do not deny yourself another moment. You came from love, you are love, and you will return to love.

Gem of the Week: First Things First

u.1.autumnriver.jpg
First Things First

Do we have it all backwards? Could it be everything we've been taught as young children is simply out of order? When did we accept that stress, depression, and anxiety are natural and joy and peace are happenstance?  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the U.S. Those suffering from anxiety often have depression, as well.

The world tells us at a very young age that in order to be secure and safe we must acquire status, self-importance, and things-lots of things! We are always on the lookout and alert for the next best thing. We compare, compete and project into the future thinking it's what we need to be happier.

What if we reversed it and joy and peace are our natural state and stress, depression and anxiety are happenstance? Humanly impossible, you say? Possibly, but not godly impossible and your true nature is godly! Fully realizing our true essence as divine in nature first opens us to a love so great that striving for external gratification and validation lessens. We know where our security and safety truly lies and it is not in self-importance and things. We trust the partnership between ourselves and the One that created everything by forcing less and flowing more. We live from the inside outwardly.

So how do you accomplish the impossible? First things first! Jesus said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you."  In silence, without words, seek the Kingdom! It is experiential, not cognitive, or action oriented. The Kingdom (joy and peace) is within you. It is you! Find a meditation practice that works for you.  I have several to choose from; my favorite is focusing on the breath with relaxing music.

Your true nature IS joy and peace not depression and anxiety. Trust the life force (love), your very breath, which lies within and without. Surrender into its grace for your well-being and that of the world's. Become aware of the richness in everyday life moments. First things first!

Gem of the Week: At the End of the Day

                        u.1.bonny.jpg

At the End of the Day

Everyone who knew Bonny thought she was an "earthly angel."  She loved people and she loved life.  Very little could get her down, including her 3-1/2 year bout with a rare leukemia which ended her life on July 4th - so apropos given her military background and love of country.  We were very close friends for 22 years and I would not have traded our relationship for anything.  Her death is my first encounter with a loss of a close, dear friend.

I got word that Bonny was dying and there was no time for me to physically get to her on time to say our good-byes in person (we lived four hours apart), so we did so over the phone.  I will always remember her voice when she said, "Denna, I love you."  We had told each other this many times over the years, but I'd never felt it like this.  The purity of it pierced my heart and my whole body became engulfed in a peaceful, beautiful cocoon as tears streamed down my face.  I will never forget that moment.

Throughout Bonny's struggle and severe suffering with leukemia, I wondrously watched her love for everything and everyone grow even stronger.   She wanted everyone to know that at the end of the day, "love is all that matters."  Drama, petty concerns, disagreements and all matters of the ego are a complete waste of precious time with our short time on earth.  Look past it all and see only love, because at the end of the day, love is all that matters, and love is in everything and everyone!

Bonny loved my "Gem of the Week" (Even if she didn't, she'd never say so.) and often encouraged me to continue writing.  I'd like to dedicate this Gem to her by sharing the words to a beautiful song from her funeral:

GIVE ME AWAY by Rita Sago

When I die...give what's left of me, the essence of me away

To those who need strength and peace and joy

And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone

And give them what you need to give me.

You can love me most by letting hands touch hands and hearts touch hearts

and by letting go of those that need to be free

I want to leave you with something

Something better than words or sounds

Let me live on in your heart and your eyes

Look for me in the people I have known and loved and remember

Feel my presence when you reach out to my husband and son and remember

Love doesn't die.  People do.

So when all that's left of me is love....give me away.
