Gem of the Week: Gotta Have Faith, Faith, Faith
"Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered.
No one was there." ~unknown
What's our worst enemy? - FEAR: fear of lack, fear of failure, fear of sickness, fear of loss, fear of aging, and on and on it goes. There's so much fear going around these days! A lot is due to the media and social media. It's constantly there, constantly reminding us of this issue or that crisis. It seems we can never escape it. And as a result, it's easy to become fearful and lose faith in the power of love and goodness.
Dictionary.com describes faith: confidence or trust in a person or thing; belief that is not based on proof; belief in God or in the doctrine or teachings of religion. How much faith do you have? How much fear do you have? God is love. Love is the greatest force of all. Love conquers all, including fear. Love IS.
As many of you know, I am a certified hypnotherapist with over 15 years of experience. Naturally, I'm a huge advocate of the power of our thoughts which stem from the beliefs held in our hearts or subconscious minds. Your subconscious mind governs 90% of your daily functions: emotions, feelings, automatic functions, long-term memory, habit patterns, addictions, instincts, intuition, creativity and spirituality. All input through your thoughts and senses are stored in your subconscious mind. You can think of your subconscious mind as the hard drive in your computer. Your conscious mind governs 10% of your daily functions: thinks, plans, organizes, short-term memory, gate-keeper. It can be thought of as your software or operating system. You must be careful as to what you are downloading into your subconscious.
Now, ask yourself these: What music am I listening to? What books am I reading? How much bad news do I watch on TV? How much do I dwell on the negative? Where and with whom am I spending my free time? What are my habitual thoughts or words? What am I downloading into my subconscious?
Your answers to the above either fuel your fear or your faith! Every input goes directly into your subconscious mind. And the stronger the emotional charge, the more impact it has in your daily living.
What is the most direct way to substitute fear for faith?
We are made in the image of God. The superconscious mind is the God Mind within each of us. It is the realm of perfect ideas. Jesus said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," and he said the Kingdom was within man. The Kingdom is the realm of perfect ideas and holds the fruits of the spirit: joy, peace, harmony, and love.
Connecting your superconscious mind to your subconscious mind is the perfect marriage in living a life of faith versus fear. Nothing stands between you and the desires of your heart, than doubt and fear. God wants to give you your heart's desires! "Ask and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you." But... you gotta have faith, faith, faith.
I believe the ultimate, strongest desire of each of our hearts is simply love - to commune in oneness with our Creator. Love is the greatest force of all. Love conquers all. Love IS. Find the daily practice that is best for you to commune in God's love to strengthen your faith and weaken your fear - joining your superconscious and subconscious in perfect union; to live a life with more joy, peace, harmony and love giving you your heart's desires.

Gem of the Week: A Soul Felt Its Worth
The Soul |
"O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth."
Deep in my heart, I believe that was Jesus' main mission. That is, to awaken people to their divinity; the God within themselves. Did he not say, "The kingdom of God is within" and "You can do as much as me and even more." We are like Jesus. Our true nature is Godly.
My Christmas wish for you is one of pure Joy! Put aside your judgments of self and others in order to know your worth. You are a sparkling gem; a gift to the world! Yes, you!!
Merry Christmas!

Gem of the Week: Hokey Pokey, Anyone?
Hokey Pokey, Anyone?
Hanging in my hallway, where I can read it often, is a sign with the words, What if the Hokey Pokey Really IS What It's All About? I bought it a few years back thinking it would be a great reminder to lighten up, to not take myself, or life, too seriously. I had become very aware that with life's ups and downs and unpredictability, the ultimate goal, the only one that makes sense, has to be to live in joy.
I've found that joy is not dependent on what happens or doesn't happen or what's considered good or bad or on anything that lies outside of me. It is 100% dependent on my perspectives, thoughts, and judgments; especially judgments. We clearly have the choice to choose joy. Why would we choose not to have it? For many people, being unhappy protects them from pain. Surprising, huh? Brene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, states in her book, Daring Greatly, that after many years of studying what it means to be joyful, she'd argue that joy is probably the most difficult emotion to feel. When she asked participants about the experiences that made them feel the most vulnerable, she did not expect the joyful moments. One lady reported to Brown, "It's easier to live disappointed than it is to feel disappointed. It feels more vulnerable to dip in and out of disappointment than to just set up camp there. You sacrifice joy, but you suffer less pain." Brown states that we are desperate for more joy, but at the same time we can't tolerate the vulnerability. The good news is gratitude, according to Brown, emerged from her data as the antidote to foreboding joy. "In fact, every participant who spoke about the ability to stay open to joy also talked about the importance of practicing gratitude. Her research participants consistently described both joyfulness and gratitude as spiritual practices bound to a belief in human connectedness and a power greater than us. Participants described happiness as an emotion that's connected to circumstances, and they described joy as a spiritual way of engaging with the world that's connected to practicing gratitude." I believe our divine birthright is a glorious adventure of Joy. Unfortunately, at a very young age we are taught to believe quite differently. We are taught judgments and ideologies that are anything but joyful. We are also bombarded daily with news of gloom and doom portraying nothing remotely close to joy; only scarcity and fear. And yes, it takes courage to be joyful! It's really easy to be unhappy. But we clearly have the choice. We have the choice to believe or not believe the negative perspectives and thoughts that rob us of our joy. We have the choice to limit how much negative input we allow in our lives. We have the choice to live life to its fullest which requires vulnerability and possibly being disappointed or to wear an armor of protection just going through the motions of life. We have the choice to focus on scarcity or to practice gratitude. What if... The Hokey Pokey Really IS What It's All About? What if... life doesn't have to be so serious? What if... unadulterated joy is the goal? What if you, being divine in nature, are joy? I think so! Sparkle on! To purchase, visit www.dennashelton.com/digital_downloads.htm

Gem of the Week: Our Greatest Gift
Our Greatest Gift
"We have not come into this
exquisite world to hold ourselves
hostage from love. We have not
come here to take prisoners,
but to surrender ever more
deeply to freedom and joy."~Hafez
Many people have difficulty giving and receiving love because of hurt and fear - me included from time to time. Our loving heart, like our physical one, needs to be exercised. It is a muscle based on trust. This trust muscle needs to be used. If not, it becomes weakened. We must take responsibility for this loving function of ourselves.
Love hidden or love rejected can turn us into walking robots. We no longer experience the true joys of life. The receiving of love inward and the flow outward is the ultimate human experience. There is a lot of love around us, but often we do not realize it. I've heard people that have become very ill state how that didn't realize there was so much love for them until they became sick. Must we wait for illness or a catastrophic event in our lives to open to love? We need to claim our hearts now as a precious commodity and work on giving and receiving love.
In stillness and quiet, consciously open your heart to the greatest love of all - that of the Divine. Make it a practice. Enveloping yourself often in this unconditional love builds trust to freely love others. You are a child of the Divine, worthy of such love and joy. Your heart is fashioned in God's image at the center of your being. Its ability to give and receive love is crucial to your soul. Do not deny yourself another moment. You came from love, you are love, and you will return to love.

Gem of the Week: At the End of the Day
At the End of the Day Everyone who knew Bonny thought she was an "earthly angel." She loved people and she loved life. Very little could get her down, including her 3-1/2 year bout with a rare leukemia which ended her life on July 4th - so apropos given her military background and love of country. We were very close friends for 22 years and I would not have traded our relationship for anything. Her death is my first encounter with a loss of a close, dear friend. I got word that Bonny was dying and there was no time for me to physically get to her on time to say our good-byes in person (we lived four hours apart), so we did so over the phone. I will always remember her voice when she said, "Denna, I love you." We had told each other this many times over the years, but I'd never felt it like this. The purity of it pierced my heart and my whole body became engulfed in a peaceful, beautiful cocoon as tears streamed down my face. I will never forget that moment. Throughout Bonny's struggle and severe suffering with leukemia, I wondrously watched her love for everything and everyone grow even stronger. She wanted everyone to know that at the end of the day, "love is all that matters." Drama, petty concerns, disagreements and all matters of the ego are a complete waste of precious time with our short time on earth. Look past it all and see only love, because at the end of the day, love is all that matters, and love is in everything and everyone! Bonny loved my "Gem of the Week" (Even if she didn't, she'd never say so.) and often encouraged me to continue writing. I'd like to dedicate this Gem to her by sharing the words to a beautiful song from her funeral: GIVE ME AWAY by Rita Sago When I die...give what's left of me, the essence of me away

Gem of the Week: Let Your Soul Shine!
Happy Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year and the first day of summer! Due to the extended daylight on June 21st, it is one of my favorite days of the year. Yes, I'm a sun worshiper. I literally equate sun to joy. Now, I appreciate a rainy day, as well. In my mind, it allows me curl up on the couch with a good book. But sun, lots of sun, is what energizes and inspires my creativity, evoking my joy.

Gem of the Week: Less is More
Less is More A few weeks back, these beautiful horses appeared in our front yard. They'd broken free from their fencing and were grazing and frolicking about against an intensely green backdrop on a spring day. As I watched them from my front porch hoping they would never leave, I thought of the richness and simplicity of their existence. Just as what these horses represented to me, our divine essence provides the freedom to fully experience the richness of life in all its simplicity. We are taught at a very young age that our value lies in the accumulation of things - lots of things. Without these, we do not measure up. This idea, the driving force in our lives, is the root of the many mental and emotional disorders so prevalent today. Yet, we accumulate more things while simultaneously take our anxiety medications to deal with it all. TV commercials constantly stimulate the idea of accumulating more to be happy. Their messages promote lack consciousness and that happiness lies in acquiring their product. Many listen to commercials mindlessly and are living on autopilot with consumption being the destination! I often laugh at our local recycling center as we rush in to get rid of stuff and rush out to acquire more stuff. Solely identifying as a physical being denies our divine nature. It is no wonder, then, that purely striving for possessions and prestige becomes the main objective of the human experience! Yet, in the stillness of and surrender to the Divine lies our true essence and value. This gives us more than we could possibly obtain in our ego driven attempts to prove our worth. Ultimately, peace, joy, harmony, love, and freedom are what our souls truly want. In stillness and surrender a wellspring of love nourishes and gently guides us in oneness with the Divine. We can trust its tender voice from within and flow peacefully with the circumstances of our lives. With ego leading the way life is an altogether different experience. External evidence of our value is of upmost importance and we are enslaved to other's judgements and opinions. No longer are we free, but prisoners in a life of struggle. The true essence of you is a hundred times better for everyone than your status and self-importance through acquisitions. These are masks that hide your pure radiance which naturally exudes love. Cultivating the divine allows you to see the sacredness in everyone and everything. You are then in a state of grace and the doing flows from this state. The heart escapes the rat race and peacefully lives moment by moment in awe and appreciation. Sparkle on! Yay! My NEW eBook, "Soul's Journey to Self Love" is NOW available!
