Journey to the Self;

                         Reclaiming Wholeness

I AM Harmony

Just as chosen musical notes create harmonics, so do your thoughts and feelings create either discord or harmony.  Choose to see the beauty in yourself and others creating beautiful harmony.

~Denna

I AM Joy

Joy is you at the deepest level.  You are the Joy you seek and are connected with the boundless Joy of the universe.

~Denna

I AM Love

Mastery of Life:  With an open heart, give out Love and, equally as important, allow it to come in.

~Denna

I AM Peace

Affirmation:  I AM Peace.  I let go of all worry.  I release all control.  I surrender to a higher power.  I know all is for the best.  I AM in the flow of life.  I AM Peace.

Gem of the Week: Our Greatest Gift

u.1.autumn.jpg

"We have not come into this exquisite world to hold ourselves hostage from love.  We have not come here to take prisoners, but to surrender ever more deeply to freedom and joy."~Hafez

Why do we withhold love and joy from ourselves?  Why would we deny ourselves freedom to fully be authentic?  Is it fear of hurt or rejection?  Is it simply not feeling worthy?  Our ability to give and receive love is our greatest gift; our greatest joy.  Closing our hearts to others, leaves us feeling empty.

Many people have difficulty giving and receiving love because of hurt and fear - me included from time to time.  Our loving heart, like our physical one, needs to be exercised.  It is a muscle based on trust.  This trust muscle needs to be used.  If not, it becomes weakened. We must take responsibility for this loving function of ourselves.

Love hidden or love rejected can turn us into walking robots.  We no longer experience the true joys of life.  The receiving of love inward and the flow outward is the ultimate human experience.  There is a lot of love around us, but often we do not realize it.  I've heard people that have become very ill state how that didn't realize there was so much love for them until they became sick.  Must we wait for illness or a catastrophic event in our lives to open to love?  We need to claim our hearts now as a precious commodity and work on giving and receiving love.

In stillness and quiet, consciously open your heart to the greatest love of all - that of the Divine.  Make it a practice.  Enveloping yourself often in this unconditional love builds trust to freely love others. You are a child of the Divine, worthy of such love and joy. Your heart is fashioned in God's image at the center of your being.  Its ability to give and receive love is crucial to your soul.  Do not deny yourself another moment. You came from love, you are love, and you will return to love.

Gem of the Week: First Things First

u.1.autumnriver.jpg

Do we have it all backwards? Could it be everything we've been taught as young children is simply out of order? When did we accept that stress, depression, and anxiety are natural and joy and peace are happenstance?  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the U.S. Those suffering from anxiety often have depression, as well.

The world tells us at a very young age that in order to be secure and safe we must acquire status, self-importance, and things-lots of things! We are always on the lookout and alert for the next best thing. We compare, compete and project into the future thinking it's what we need to be happier.

What if we reversed it and joy and peace are our natural state and stress, depression and anxiety are happenstance? Humanly impossible, you say? Possibly, but not godly impossible and your true nature is godly! Fully realizing our true essence as divine in nature first opens us to a love so great that striving for external gratification and validation lessens. We know where our security and safety truly lies and it is not in self-importance and things. We trust the partnership between ourselves and the One that created everything by forcing less and flowing more. We live from the inside outwardly.

So how do you accomplish the impossible? First things first! Jesus said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you."  In silence, without words, seek the Kingdom! It is experiential, not cognitive, or action oriented. The Kingdom (joy and peace) is within you. It is you! Find a meditation practice that works for you.  I have several to choose from; my favorite is focusing on the breath with relaxing music.

Your true nature IS joy and peace not depression and anxiety. Trust the life force (love), your very breath, which lies within and without. Surrender into its grace for your well-being and that of the world's. Become aware of the richness in everyday life moments. First things first!

Gem of the Week: At the End of the Day

                        u.1.bonny.jpg

Everyone who knew Bonny thought she was an "earthly angel."  She loved people and she loved life.  Very little could get her down, including her 3-1/2 year bout with a rare leukemia which ended her life on July 4th - so apropos given her military background and love of country.  We were very close friends for 22 years and I would not have traded our relationship for anything.  Her death is my first encounter with a loss of a close, dear friend.

I got word that Bonny was dying and there was no time for me to physically get to her on time to say our good-byes in person (we lived four hours apart), so we did so over the phone.  I will always remember her voice when she said, "Denna, I love you."  We had told each other this many times over the years, but I'd never felt it like this.  The purity of it pierced my heart and my whole body became engulfed in a peaceful, beautiful cocoon as tears streamed down my face.  I will never forget that moment.

Throughout Bonny's struggle and severe suffering with leukemia, I wondrously watched her love for everything and everyone grow even stronger.   She wanted everyone to know that at the end of the day, "love is all that matters."  Drama, petty concerns, disagreements and all matters of the ego are a complete waste of precious time with our short time on earth.  Look past it all and see only love, because at the end of the day, love is all that matters, and love is in everything and everyone!

Bonny loved my "Gem of the Week" (Even if she didn't, she'd never say so.) and often encouraged me to continue writing.  I'd like to dedicate this Gem to her by sharing the words to a beautiful song from her funeral:

GIVE ME AWAY by Rita Sago

When I die...give what's left of me, the essence of me away

To those who need strength and peace and joy

And if you need to cry, cry for your brother walking the street beside you

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone

And give them what you need to give me.

You can love me most by letting hands touch hands and hearts touch hearts

and by letting go of those that need to be free

I want to leave you with something

Something better than words or sounds

Let me live on in your heart and your eyes

Look for me in the people I have known and loved and remember

Feel my presence when you reach out to my husband and son and remember

Love doesn't die.  People do.

So when all that's left of me is love....give me away.

Gem of the Week: Let Your Soul Shine!

u.1.summer.jpg

Happy Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year and the first day of summer!  Due to the extended daylight on June 21st, it is one of my favorite days of the year.  Yes, I'm a sun worshiper.  I literally equate sun to joy.  Now, I appreciate a rainy day, as well.  In my mind, it allows me  curl up on the couch with a good book.  But sun, lots of sun, is what energizes and inspires my creativity, evoking my joy.

Solstice comes from the Latin "solstitium." This breaks down even further to "sol" meaning "sun" and "stit" meaning "stopped."  Essentially, the solstice marks the point where the sun "stops" at its highest point in the sky before moving back in the opposite direction.  As a new friend of mine stated in a recent article on the summer solstice, "It is a very good thing to stand still before changing directions."

In stillness we find truth and unfathomable love.  In stillness we are guided to our next best step.  In stillness we are removed from the drama of our circumstances and connect with our true essence.  In stillness we not only find peace and joy we ARE peace and joy!  I often think of this verse from the Bible, "Be still and know I AM God." Psalms 46:10.

May today and everyday you be still long enough to reconnect with your true essence and the fruits of the Spirit - truth, joy, peace, and love -  hearing the gentle voice within guiding your path and allowing your soul to shine.  And by all means, enJOY the extra sun today!

Gem of the Week: Less is More

u.1.horses.jpg

A few weeks back, these beautiful horses appeared in our front yard.  They'd broken free from their fencing and were grazing and frolicking about against an intensely green backdrop on a spring day.  As I watched them from my front porch hoping they would never leave, I thought of the richness and simplicity of their existence.  Just as what these horses represented to me, our divine essence provides the freedom to fully experience the richness of life in all its simplicity.

We are taught at a very young age that our value lies in the accumulation of things - lots of things.  Without these, we do not measure up.  This idea, the driving force in our lives, is the root of the many mental and emotional disorders so prevalent today.  Yet, we accumulate more things while simultaneously take our anxiety medications to deal with it all.

TV commercials constantly stimulate the idea of accumulating more to be happy.  Their messages promote lack consciousness and that happiness lies in acquiring their product.  Many listen to commercials mindlessly and are living on autopilot with consumption being the destination!  I often laugh at our local recycling center as we rush in to get rid of stuff and rush out to acquire more stuff.

Solely identifying as a physical being denies our divine nature.  It is no wonder, then, that purely striving for possessions and prestige becomes the main objective of the human experience!  Yet, in the stillness of and surrender to the Divine lies our true essence and value.  This gives us more than we could possibly obtain in our ego driven attempts to prove our worth.  Ultimately, peace, joy, harmony, love, and freedom are what our souls truly want.

In stillness and surrender a wellspring of love nourishes and gently guides us in oneness with the Divine.  We can trust its tender voice from within and flow peacefully with the circumstances of our lives.  With ego leading the way life is an altogether different experience.  External evidence of our value is of upmost importance and we are enslaved to other's judgements and opinions.  No longer are we free, but prisoners in a life of struggle.

The true essence of you is a hundred times better for everyone than your status and self-importance through acquisitions.  These are masks that hide your pure radiance which naturally exudes love.  Cultivating the divine allows you to see the sacredness in everyone and everything.  You are then in a state of grace and the doing flows from this state.  The heart escapes the rat race and peacefully lives moment by moment in awe and appreciation.

Gem of the Week: Spring Cleanup

u.1.trilium.jpg

Yesterday was the perfect spring day where I live in Western North Carolina!  The smell of freshly cut grass, the sight of blue, expansive skies above the mountain tops, and cool breezes accompanied by the warmth of the sun against my face provided the ideal conditions for spring cleanup on our five-acre property.  I was excited because I knew the wildflowers below the winter debris were waiting to emerge in all their magnificence.

As I gently raked the layers of dead leaves and limbs where the trillium (as seen in the photo above) showcase their magnificence each spring, I was taken by their loveliness.  I also felt proud and purposeful in providing them their freedom to stand in all their glory.

Later that evening I began reflecting on my spring cleanup.  It dawned on me that many of our false beliefs and negative thoughts cause layers of debris to cover our own true magnificence similar to the trillium's.  The darkness of our negativity allows very little room for Light  and Love to permeate our hearts. We lose sight of who we truly are as a beautiful creation of the Creator of All.

It's springtime - time for new beginnings!  Allow the Light and Love of your Creator to permeate your heart, cleaning false beliefs and negative thoughts to produce feelings of Joy, Love and Peace; a new state of Being! Give yourself the freedom to emerge anew, standing in all your glory!

Have a wonderful week!

Gem of the Week: A Little Less 'Doing' & A Lot More 'Being'

u.1.beach.jpg

Life seems more complex and unpredictable than ever.  Things are changing so drastically, both personally and globally, that sometimes it's difficult to assimilate it all.

Some of us are deeply concerned about the economy, the threats to our security at home and abroad, the environment, and education.  Others have serious family, work, and health issues or a combination of all the above.

Often it feels there is very little we can do to truly make a difference in the world.  I'd like to propose that actually a little less doing and a lot more Being is monumental in changing you - in changing the world!

Your true Being is one of joy, harmony, peace and love.  To bring it forward, you must retreat from the noise of your life and replenish your heart and soul from the Source from which you came.  In this renewed state of Being, your love flows freely and your light shines brighter.  The ripple effect of this within your family, community, and further into the world is powerful beyond measure.

A good friend of mine and best selling author, @CarlBozeman, once said, "Never ever lose sight that what you do in the world will never surpass what you simply ARE in the world!

A little less doing and a lot more Being is exactly what we all can do to truly make a difference!  The world is in need of your love - your light.

Gem of the Week: The Greatest Lie Ever Told:

u.1.beachsunset.jpg

Yes, once again, my Gem of the Week is on worthiness.  I tried to get away from this subject in my mind, but continually circled back through my heart.

In my work, I counsel others with different conditions and behaviors that interfere with their well-being. More times than not, the underlying issue to the problem is feeling unworthy. There are innumerable reasons or causes for the feeling of unworthiness and this feeling, to one degree or another, is the root for so much unhappiness. May I just say, once again, you ARE worthy! You ARE good enough! Any voice outside or inside of your head that says anything differently simply is a lie!

Each of us is a beautiful, radiant soul. It is only the debris from past conditioning (often stemming back to childhood) and the daily dust that settles upon us that keeps us from knowing our true self. We constantly ask ourselves, "Are we good enough?" and look for external validation in hopes that we just might be.  Our souls long to be free. It is only our false beliefs and thinking that prevents it.

You were created in the image of God. You ARE as God - you are made of the same stuff as God! There is no separation from you and God. AND nothing you do or do not do will ever create that separation except in your own thinking or mind. That makes you pretty darn worthy and you knew it to the core of your being when you arrived here on Earth. Only when others' conditions and beliefs were thrust upon you did you then forget. Is it your time to remember and feel the joy of simply being alive? You ARE so worthy of such joy!

When we stay centered in the truth of what we are, our state of being is that of love. Circumstances and the actions of others or their behaviors do not knock us off center nearly as far or as often.   We are aware there is nothing outside of ourselves that is responsible for our well-being.  We don't need the approval of others to be happy knowing our true strength is in the very essence of what we are.

Allow, accept, and appreciate not only your divinity but your humanity in all of its imperfections. Forgive yourself and others when necessary to remove the dust that covers your radiance. Find ways to bask in your oneness with the Creator of All and Its unconditional love. This love then becomes the cornerstone of your life. Loving service to others is a natural out-pour and your gifts naturally unfold into the world. Not because you should, but because it simply just happens - such joy!

Your life is the most important life! Play it out as if it is a great movie - a blockbuster - and you are the star because you ARE and that's the truth.

Love Yourself More Each Day in 2017!

u.1.20173.jpg

Self-love is the foundation to the most important relationship of all - that with yourself - and it's the prerequisite to truly loving others.  The Golden Rule tells us, "Love your neighbor as yourself."  This is a direct command to love you.  If you do not love yourself, you can't possibly love others.

The love I am referring to must be experienced to know true self-love.  Notice I said experienced and not defined.  However, in definition, I'm speaking of Agape love.  "Wikipedia" defines Agape love as "the highest form of love and as the love of God for man and of man for God.  It embraces  Universal, unconditional love and transcends and serves regardless of circumstances."

In the stillness and quiet is where Agape love is experienced.  "Be still and know I am God," Psalms 46:10.  You must retreat from the noise to know God - to know pure love.  Allowing this love to engulf you in its sweet embrace reveals your true identity as a "child of God" and connection to all of life.  You experience your oneness with the Creator of All.  The beliefs of separation no longer bear weight.  You know you came from love, you are love, and will return to love.  In experience, I've found Agape love to be indescribable.  Just thinking of it, I feel a great warmth and comfort.

Love yourself more each day in 2017!  I dare you. (I've always enjoyed a good dare.)   Hasn't self-criticism or self-hatred proven to close your heart and rob your joy?  May this be YOUR year to love yourself more - see where it takes you.  It can only spiral you upward.
