Gem of the Week: A Lesson from Eli

u.1.Eli.jpg

"Dog spelt backward is God and they both show unconditional love."

Sadly, we lost our Eli (his photo above),  two weeks ago. I'm very grateful he had little suffering and died peacefully. He was soon to turn 13 years old so he lived a long life for a large breed dog, but, honestly, losing him hurt worse for me than losing some humans.  I think that is due to his unconditional love.

Wikipedia defines unconditional love:  "Unconditional love is known as affection without any limitations, or love without conditions. This term is sometimes associated with other terms such as true altruism or complete love. Each area of expertise has a certain way of describing unconditional love, but most will agree that it is that type of love which has no bounds and is unchanging. ...Dogs are often considered to be examples of displaying unconditioned love."

I started to list all the cute ways Eli displayed unconditional love besides greeting me at the front door each day with his tail waging and him intuitively knowing if I wasn't feeling well hence covering my face with his rather large wet tongue, but it goes much deeper than that.  The love he exuded towards me and many others is a feeling that I cannot articulate, and in his love was a level of trust that stirs my heart each time I think about it.

The unconditional love our dogs/pets give us is what family and friends often struggle with when loving us.   How often  do you retract your love from others if your conditions aren't met? Is it moment by moment, daily, weekly, or for someone's entire lifetime?  How often do you retract your love from yourself if your self-imposed conditions for yourself aren't met? Is it moment by moment, daily, weekly or your entire lifetime? Are you waiting to be good enough, thin enough, smart enough, educated enough, funny enough, liked enough, rich enough to fully love yourself?

Self-love is the foundation to the most important relationship of all - that with yourself - (even more so than your pet's) and it's the prerequisite to truly loving others. The Golden Rule tells us, "Love your neighbor as yourself." This is a direct command to love you yourself! If you do not love yourself, you can't possibly love others.

God is unconditional love. Unconditional love is God. God resides in me, you, and everything.  Allow this love to flow to you and through you.   Surrender and bask in His unconditional love daily enabling and encouraging self-love; therefore, unconditional love for others.  Don't wait until you feel good enough. God's love has no conditions.

You don't have to earn God's love!

There are no words to articulate the feeling of God's unconditional love, but once you experience it often, you'll willingly surrender into it and trust that He's got your back.   You'll fully realize there is no separation - you are truly a child of God, you are One.  In this, you'll naturally gravitate in loving service to others.  Not out of a sense of obligation but because you want to serve.

I believe our greatest task is to love ourselves - no matter what -  and to embody self-worth so that we can be love in action. That is true service to God. That is true service to others. That is true service to yourself.

I am eternally grateful to Eli for demonstrating so beautifully unconditional love and trust.  May he sparkle on...

Gem of the Week: Planting Seeds of Love

u.1.tulipsinbuckets (1024x686).jpg"The love of a single heart
can make a difference."
~Immaculee Ilibagizu

Winter is always a time of introspection for me.  I spend more time reading, contemplating and meditating than during any of the other seasons.  I've had a particular rich winter this year in terms of filling my heart with love and joy.  But here it is the eve of first of spring and my thoughts are fully focused on daffodils, sunshine, opened windows, cleaning and planting.  Spring fever?  You betcha!

I googled "spring fever" out of curiosity and found some interesting facts.  In spring, with the increased daylight, we have increased levels of serotonin giving us that "lust for life" and more energy which makes us feel restless and just itching to get outdoors.  Also, "love is in the air" due to other hormonal shifts in the spring.  Obstetricians report high rates of unplanned pregnancies in springtime.

Not everyone, however, loves the spring.  Many suffer horribly from allergies this time of year and for some, major depression deepens pushing them over the edge, increasing springtime suicides.  This is a sobering fact and has made me extra mindful of spreading love this spring.  We don't know the battle someone may be fighting.  A simple smile can change their entire day and a kind word could save someone's life!

Simply showing up with an open heart filled

with love makes a positive difference.

May your heart burst wide open this spring showering the world with love.  May your very presence make a positive difference.  May your spring planting include seeds of love.  We cannot underestimate the ripple effect or beautiful blooms all of this creates.

Hmmm...I think I will plant colorful zinnias this spring where I normally plant marigolds.  I can't wait to raise these windows!

                                    Happy planting, Happy spring!

                                                Sparkle on!

Happy Valentine's Day!

u.1.pinkrose..jpg
The anticipation of Valentine's Day with its array of assorted chocolates ("...You never know what you are going to get."~Forest Gump) brings up about as many assorted emotions ("...You never know what you are going to get.") among us.   Romantics look forward in excitement to roses and wine while others are totally indifferent.  My husband always says, "Valentine's Day is for amateur lovers."  What a cop-out!  Ha, ha!   Sadly, many are hoping to simply endure the pain of it all. Valentine's Day can intensify the perceived notion of not being lovable or loved.

The truth of the matter is simply this:

We know how much God loves us and we have put our trust in his love.  God is love and all who live in love live in God and God lives in them.  Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear.  1John 4:16-18

God, who is perfect love, lives within you!  Your very essence is this perfection.  Anytime we search for perfect love outside of ourselves and therefore, outside of God, love diminishes.

Of course, most of us would like a box of chocolates and to be swooned on Valentine's Day.  But if this doesn't happen, it says nothing about who you truly are which is...  loved, lovable and perfect love!   Believe it, own it, and live it!

Hmm... perhaps Valentine's Day is for amateur lovers.  Nah, he is not getting off that easy!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Gems of the Week: How to BE Bigger Than Your Britches

u.1.Britches-too-big-for-me.jpg
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
~Marianne Williamson

How many times were you told as a child, "Don't get too big for your britches?"  It was used often growing up in my generation by our parents or authority figures when we were acting out of line.  It was equivalent to "Children should be seen, but not heard."   I didn't hear either of these paralyzing phrases often, but enough to know it as "reduce your presence," "be less than" and "don't shine too brightly!"   I've since learned and have fully realized  that BEING too big for my britches is exactly what I AM and this lends itself to pure, unadulterated Joy.

This realization has nothing to do with what the ego thinks in terms of big or small, and everything to do with your true Self or very essence.  I love Marianne Williamson's famous quote from her book, A Return to Love: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."  When we know the power that lies within, our Godly nature at the very core of our human experience, we fully realize how powerful we are.  Our Light shines brightly into the world and effects the whole.  Our very Presence makes a positive difference.  We become deliberate creators of our lives versus purely reacting to situations and circumstances.  Judgment dissolves and we experience more Joy throughout the day regardless of what comes our way.

Why would we be afraid of this?

Are we afraid of "getting too big for our britches?"

Is it because knowing how powerful we are makes us 100% responsible for our lives as creators?

God is within and without.  He is in you and everything.  The only way to know this is to: "Be still and know that I AM God,"  Psalms 46:10.  Spending time in quiet reflection, meditation and prayer provides the knowing and experience of indescribable greatness that is you.  God is not cognitive!  To know God, hence your very essence, is experiential.

The remainder of Marianne's famous quote is:

"It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Give yourself permission to BE bigger than your britches!

The world needs your Light!

The world needs you!

Twenty Mini-Gems for Your Best Year Ever!

u.1.happynewyear.jpg1.  Decide your own truth.  If the belief you are adhering to does not bring joy, peace, harmony & love, put it aside and choose another.

2.  Have a playful spirit; even in your daily responsibilities.  Not only will you feel better but so will those around you.

3.  Be at peace.  Surrender  to your higher power; take action as divinely guided, and know all is working towards the best.

4.  Let go of perfection.  Freely express without the fear of imperfection.  Perfection is the killer of joy.

5.  Forgive yourself and others which creates the flow of love your heart so deeply desires.

6.  Be hopeful.  Visualize and feel the change you wish to experience.  Hold steadfast to this new vision.  Know that the change you desire is on its way.

7.  Strive for balance in mind, body and spirit.  Think positive thoughts, move, nourish, and rest your body and find the spiritual practice that is right for you.

8.  Focus on harmonious feelings and let go of discord.  You are one with all there is; never separate or alone.

9.  Ask for divine protection when fear has overcome you.  Your angels are at your service at any moment's notice.

10.  Express your anger in loving ways that are not harmful to yourself and others.

11.  See humor in yourself and situations.  Laugh out loud several times daily; keeping a light heart.

12.  Embrace your sensuality.  Put aside all inhibitions.  You're a beautiful, sensual being!  Freely express all aspects of yourself in perfect balance.

13.  Have a grateful heart for what is and be open to receive the blessings God so desires to give you.

14.  Discard judgments of yourself and others. Spirit is not judging you; only encouraging your growth and expansion.

15.  Step out of the pressure cooker!  Do you best each day and allow it to be good enough.

16.  Replace the "Yes but..." with "I will..."  The only limitations you have are the ones self-imposed.

17.  Practice self-acceptance.  Without self-acceptance there is no self-love.  Without self-love it is impossible to give and accept love from others.

18.  Be gentle with yourself.  When you are gentle and nurturing to yourself, then you have feelings of worthiness.  You are worthy!

19.  Quiet the mind chatter and connect with your heart-your true essence-your spirit.  This is the only way to stay centered in the truth as to who you truly are - a magnificent divine being.

20.  Embrace your authentic power.  You're a powerful being; a creator of your life with the Source of All There Is.

Happy New Year....Sparkle on!

Gem of the Week: The Soul Felt its Worth

u.1.suninsnow.jpg

"O holy night the stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

'Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth."

"O Holy Night" is by far my and my deceased mother's favorite Christmas carol. The most heartfelt and well received Christmas gift I ever gave her was the year I sang and recorded this beautiful carol for her on a CD, signing off, "I love you, Mom." By mid-February my father told me if he heard it one more time, he'd go crazy. She heeded him no mind and played it at least once everyday way into the spring.

I love everything about the song, from the melody to the lyrics which proclaim Jesus' message of love, peace and hope. But one phrase, in particular, jumped out as I was making my mother's recording. I reread the lyrics several times to make sure I was understanding it correctly: "Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth."

Deep in my heart, I believe that was Jesus' main mission. That is, to awaken people to their divinity; the God within themselves. Did he not say, "The kingdom of God is within" and "You can do as much as me and even more." We are like Jesus. Our true nature is Godly.

My Christmas wish for you is one of pure Joy! Put aside your judgments of self and others in order to know your worth. You are a sparkling gem; a gift to the world! Yes, you!!

Merry Christmas!

Gem of the Week: Be Grateful...BE Joy!

u.1.autumn6.jpg

Be Grateful…BE Joy

The special day for gratitude and gathering of friends and family is just a few days away … Thanksgiving! Already?  Honestly, how can that be possible?  Didn’t I just bake the turkey with all its trimmings and pumpkin pies a few weeks ago?  My head is spinning just thinking about how fast this year has gone by. One thing I know for certain (and it’s been said by many) is thanks – giving or gratitude is indeed a practice to implement daily to experience more joy in our lives.

Dr. Brene Brown, research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, writes in her book, Daring Greatly, on vulnerability and “foreboding joy.”   Her data shows that joy is probably the most difficult emotion to really feel.  She says for many people joy can feel like a setup.

“We wake up in the morning and think, Work is going well. Everyone in the family is healthy.   No major crises are happening.  The house is still standing.  I’m working out and feeling good.  Oh sh**!  This is bad.   This is really bad.  Disaster must be lurking right around the corner!”

Sound familiar?  How vulnerable do you allow yourself to be in joy?  Are you waiting for the other shoe to drop?  I’m certainly guilty of this!

The good news is her data also shows that gratitude is the antidote to foreboding joy.  Brown states, “In fact, every research participant who spoke about the ability to stay open to joy also talked about the importance of practicing gratitude.”

What startled her was the fact that participants consistently described both joyfulness and gratitude as spiritual practices that were bound to a belief in human connectedness and a power greater than us.  Brown states, “Participants described happiness as an emotion that’s connected to circumstances, and they described joy as a spiritual way of engaging with the world that’s connected to practicing gratitude.”

Often while attending to everyday tasks, I feel gratitude for the things so easily taken for granted, e.g., the ability to plant my feet on the floor first thing in the morning, my first cup of coffee, the agility of my fingers as they float across the keyboard, my family, my dog, etc., - it’s endless.  The moment you begin to take notice of all the things going right, heartfelt gratitude engulfs you and a state of joy is not far behind.   Perhaps not in a “jumping for joy” kind of way, but in a sense of contentment, peaceful mind, and being fully present in the moment experiencing the wonder of life kind of ways.

In practicing gratitude, joy becomes a part of who you are.  Ultimately, I believe joy IS our very essence.  Bad things happen, but I’m betting in our ability to BE joy — we’ll be stronger.

My wish for you, this Thanksgiving holiday and throughout your life, is your heart will overflow with gratitude, grace and joy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Gem of the Week: Heart's Intelligence

u.1.hearts.jpg

Heart’s Intelligence

“If the 20th Century has been the Century of the Brain …

then the 21st century should be the Century of the Heart.”

~Gary. E.R. Schwartz, Ph.D., Author of The Living Energy Universe

One of the most astounding, exciting pieces of information I've ever received came while attending a lecture given by spiritualist/scientist Gregg Braden.  Every hair on my body stood on its end and I connected with it as deep truth.  It validated from a scientific perspective what I already knew to be true.  Gregg shared the findings from the Institute of Heart Math stating that “the heart, not the brain, is the most powerful neural-network within the human body.”  I learned its electricity is 40-60% stronger than the brain’s and contains around 40,000 “brain-like cells” that literally communicate with the brain in every nanosecond of the day.

Coherence between our hearts and our brains is the ultimate state of being in experiencing overall emotional, physical, and mental health. “Unfortunately ego choices are overriding our heart’s intelligence,” states the Institute of Heart Math.  Most of us already know this to be true and have no need for the science of it.  Yet, do we really know how powerful our hearts are?  Do we really know how powerful we are when heart-centered?  Do we really know our impact on the planet by what lies within our individual heart?

The ultimate question may be… What old stories and beliefs are you holding in your heart that are governing your life and affecting the whole?

Science has proven what ancient wisdom has known all along.  The heart is powerful and holds an intelligence all of its own – often referred to as the “master organ” and was revered and celebrated by the ancients. “It’s only in more recent history that the pendulum swung the other way in science and medicine in thinking of the heart as an isolated pump,” states Gregg Braden in his book, Resilience from the Heart.

Is now the time for the pendulum to swing back to the center balancing our hearts with our brains?  Is now the time for us to access the wisdom our hearts hold?  Surely now is the time to have a state of being which radiates love, joy, peace and harmony in a powerful way for our personal well-being and that of the worlds.

You’re cordially invited to join us for a global conversation to discuss the topic “Heart’s Intelligence.”  This is a #SpiritChat community event taking place on the Twitter platform this Sunday, November 11 at 9am ET.

We look forward to having you join us!

Gem of the Week: First Things First

u.1.autumn.jpg

First Things First

Do we have it all backwards? Could it be everything we've been taught as young children is simply out of order? When did we accept that stress, depression, and anxiety are natural and joy and peace are happenstance?  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the U.S. Those suffering from anxiety often have depression, as well.

The world tells us at a very young age that in order to be secure and safe we must acquire status, self-importance, and things-lots of things! We are always on the lookout and alert for the next best thing. We compare, compete and project into the future thinking it's what we need to be happier.

What if we reversed it and joy and peace are our natural state and stress, depression and anxiety are happenstance? Humanly impossible, you say? Possibly, but not godly impossible and your true nature is godly! Fully realizing our true essence as divine in nature first opens us to a love so great that striving for external gratification and validation lessens. We know where our security and safety truly lies and it is not in self-importance and things. We trust the partnership between ourselves and the One that created everything by forcing less and flowing more. We live from the inside outwardly.

So how do you accomplish the impossible? First things first! Jesus said, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you."  In silence, without words, seek the Kingdom! It is experiential, not cognitive, or action oriented. The Kingdom (joy and peace) is within you. It is you! Find a meditation practice that works for you.  I have several to choose from; my favorite is focusing on the breath with relaxing music.

Your true nature IS joy and peace not depression and anxiety. Trust the life force (love), your very breath, which lies within and without. Surrender into its grace for your well-being and that of the world's. Become aware of the richness in everyday life moments. First things first!

Gem of the Week: Unlearn What You Have Learned

 Unlearn What You Have Learned

"You must unlearn what you have learned."~Yoda

This time of year with the beginning of a new school year brings back many memories for me as a mother and a student.  As a mother, I recall the hustle and bustle of purchasing new school clothes and classroom supplies for my children; reflecting on the summer break with a trace of sadness that it was over, but also an eager readiness to get back into a regular regime.

As a student, I also recall picking out new clothes and supplies.  Actually can smell right now the #2 lead pencils and pink erasers.  Loved, loved that emerald green sweater and pant set I wore the first day of middle school.  Although, it was way too early to wear at that time of year.  I was  so very hot that day, but looked good - ha!  My strongest recollection is my excitement for the new books.  I loved books and enjoyed learning as I still do to this day.  But school isn't the only place to learn.  You can learn in the school of life.

In life's school, unfortunately, we can be misinformed or have experiences that leave us conflicted and confused creating negative thoughts and suffering.  We may have been taught ideologies and concepts that dis-empowered and robbed us of our joy.  This is when unlearning helps and heals.  As Yoda from Star Wars states, "You must unlearn what you have learned."

Eric Butterworth, the popular minister, author and positive thought advocate claimed,  "More important than learning to recall things is finding ways to forget things that are cluttering the mind."  How do we unlearn and unclutter the mind?

We unlearn and unclutter our minds in stillness and quiet connecting with our hearts.  Allowing unconditional love, God's love, to purge, purify and reveal truth.  Your mind infused with unconditional love is you exemplified as  pure radiance.  It's you experiencing joy and peace within yourself not contingent on outer circumstances.  It's you on a continuous "summer break" while simultaneously learning and growing in life's school.

May you unlearn anything that keeps you from knowing to the core of your being how deeply loved you are.  May you unlearn anything that robs your joy.  May your mind be uncluttered of all thoughts that diminish your peace.  The choice is always yours.

Sparkle on!
